He continues, "I think it should be interpreted by each person, depending upon how they're oriented. I personally take the art reference most deeply myself," says Ruffalo.
"I have a bit of control, but a lot less than people might think or want to believe," says Ruffalo of his public image.
The Hulk had a moment in Iron Man III and returns full force in Avengers: Age of Ultron next year. The 2015 movie promises a more complex story line for Bruce Banner/The Hulk and will feature much more of the green guy than before.
Mark Ruffalo on the many layers of Again Again is a tale of love and music, but there's a distinctly redemptive tone to the movie some would say spiritual, almost.
Is this encounter some nod to religion? To Alcoholics Anonymous? To the transformative power of art?
Laughing, he adds, "But it remains to be seen what it will say on my tombstone."

Commercial success came in a big way in 2012 when he played The Hulk in The Avengers. The casting initially seemed a bit odd to fans of the actor (as well as to fans of The Hulk), but, typically, Ruffalo made the role his own.
Certainly, there are people near and dear to Carney who have struggled with alcoholism, says Ruffalo.
Isn't it a little odd, though, that with his body of work, Ruffalo is best known for playing a comic book character?

"That, and the quality of the job I do when I get there."
"John Carney is Irish, and he has that Catholic kind of sensibility," says the actor. "I think he's playing with that, and with the redemptive qualities of those beliefs."
It's a subtle moment, but typical of how layered this ostensible love story really is.
Maybe not so much in a typical way, adds Ruffalo, "but he definitely has that guy on the subway show up at that moment for a reason."
"But it ain't over yet, that's all I've got to say, he jokes.
"It is funny to me, that after all these years, that's something I've become synonymous with, but there are also a lot of people who know me for a lot more than that. As I say, I try not to control it too much. I try not to ignore it too much. I kind of go where my heart takes me, and that's really all I have control over.
"I did a couple of romantic comedies early on in my career," says Ruffalo, who phoned up to promote Begin Again. "Those are fun, and I like the genre, when it's actually romantic or comedic." He laughs a little. "But rarely is it either."

"It's pretty amazing how much people talk about it. It's cute for the kids, to see them, 'My daddy's The Hulk!' Little kids rush up to me and I puff up my cheeks a little bit and they tear off in the other direction."
Fans of The Hulk might be surprised to see their favourite jolly green giant as the lead in a terrific new romantic movie.

Ruffalo, 46, has had a remarkably cheese free career. The actor started in theatre and had bit parts in a dozen films before his breakout role in Kenneth Lonergan's You Can Count On Me (2000) opposite Laura Linney. You Can Count On Me was Oscar nominated and people sat up and took notice of Ruffalo; from there, he starred in films such as XX/XY, My Life Without Me, In The Cut, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, 13 Going On 30, Puma Basket Heart Woman Collateral, Zodiac, Reservation Road, The Brothers Bloom, The Kids Are All Right, Shutter Island and Margaret, among others. His work covers superb performances in every conceivable genre and has made Ruffalo a favourite among critics.
"I thought that was novel," he says. "So I got to do a romantic comedy musical all at once and didn't feel I was doing anything cheesy."
